Physicians Mutual Medicare Supplement in Oklahoma

Physicians Mutual

Physicians Mutual sells Medicare Supplement in Oklahoma, and the first thing worth being precise about is which company actually writes it. Oklahoma Medigap policies come from Physicians Select Insurance Company - a newer member of the Physicians Mutual family, formed in 2022. That distinction matters for a few reasons we cover below, and most sites get it wrong.

Which Medigap Plans Are Available in Oklahoma

Medicare Supplement plans are standardized by letter, so a Plan G is a Plan G no matter who sells it. What differs between carriers is price, rate structure, and service. Physicians Select offers four of the ten letters in Oklahoma.

Plan Available in Oklahoma Notes
Plan A Yes The basic standardized benefit set. The optional wellness rider is not available with Plan A
Plan F Yes Only if you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. Closed to everyone else by federal law
Plan G Yes The most popular plan for anyone new to Medicare. Also sold in an Innovative version, below
High-Deductible Plan G Yes Much lower premium, with a high annual deductible before benefits start
Plan N No Not offered by Physicians Select in Oklahoma. If Plan N is what fits you, we will quote it elsewhere
Plans B, C, D, K, L, M, High-Deductible F No Not offered in Oklahoma

The Plan N gap is worth saying out loud. Plan N is one of the highest-volume Medigap plans in the country because it trades small copays for a meaningfully lower premium. Physicians Select does not offer it in Oklahoma. If you are comparing on price and Plan N is in the mix, this carrier cannot be part of that comparison - and we will tell you that rather than steering you into a Plan G you did not ask for.

Innovative Plan G

This is the product Physicians Select is actually built around, and it is genuinely different from a standard Plan G. It attaches an Innovative Discount Rider to a standard Plan G: you accept a deductible for up to the first three calendar years in exchange for a permanently lower premium for as long as you keep the policy.

The bet is that you will not have a heavy claims year early on. If that holds, the lower premium compounds for decades. If it does not, you pay the deductible in those first years. Dropping the rider before year three returns you to standard Plan G pricing and ends the preventive coverage that comes with it.

The carrier publishes savings projections for this design. Those are their figures and their assumptions, not ours, so treat them as marketing rather than a promise. What we can tell you is the mechanic, which is real: a defined early deductible in exchange for a permanently reduced rate.

How the Rate Is Structured - This Is the Part People Miss

Physicians Select prices Oklahoma Medigap on an attained-age basis. That means your premium increases as you get older, on top of the general rate increases every Medigap carrier files.

Attained-age plans usually look cheapest at 65 and become expensive in your late 70s and 80s. Issue-age and community-rated plans start higher and age better. Neither is right or wrong - but comparing a first-year attained-age premium against a first-year issue-age premium and picking the lower number is how people end up trapped in an expensive policy at 80, when switching requires medical underwriting.

This is exactly where Oklahoma’s rules help you, and it is the most valuable thing on this page. Keep reading.

Oklahoma’s Birthday Rule: You Can Switch Every Year Without Underwriting

Most states let a Medigap carrier underwrite you the moment your initial enrollment window closes. Get sick, and you are effectively locked into whatever policy you hold. Oklahoma is one of only eight states that changed this.

Under Oklahoma Administrative Code 365:10-5-129(f), effective September 1, 2023, if you already hold a Medigap policy you may move to another policy with the same or lesser benefits - from any carrier - without medical underwriting and without new pre-existing condition exclusions. Carriers satisfy the rule by giving you a 60 day window beginning on your birthday every year.

What it means Detail
When A 60 calendar day open enrollment period starting on your birthday, every year
Who qualifies Any current Medigap policyholder with no gap in coverage greater than 90 days, regardless of which carrier you are with
Where you bought it Does not matter. It applies if you now live in Oklahoma, even if the policy was issued in another state
Under 65 on disability Applies to you as well
The limit Same or lesser benefits only. Moving up to a richer plan is still medically underwritten

Why this matters specifically for an attained-age plan like this one. The usual risk with attained-age pricing is being stuck with it when premiums climb and your health no longer passes underwriting. Oklahoma’s birthday rule substantially defuses that - every year you get a window to move to a same-or-lesser plan with no health questions. It is genuinely one of the better consumer protections in the country, and most Oklahomans on Medicare have never heard of it.

Two details worth knowing: the Oklahoma Insurance Department is deliberate that this is an open enrollment, not a guaranteed issue right, and innovative benefits are not treated as significant benefits under the rule - so an Innovative Plan G is reachable through the birthday window.

We track your birthday window and check the market for you each year. That is a large part of what having an agent is actually for.

Discounts and Extras

  • Household discount of roughly 10 to 12 percent when another Medicare-eligible adult in your household also holds a policy. The exact figure varies by source, so we confirm it at quote rather than promising a number.
  • Non-tobacco discount is available.
  • Automatic bank withdrawal is the base rate. Monthly direct bill or credit card carries a small monthly surcharge.
  • Preventive Benefits Plus Rider - optional coverage for annual physicals, health screenings and routine blood work. Not available with Plan A. It excludes dental, all vision, chiropractic and acupuncture, weight loss, drugs and supplements, and genetic testing.
  • Silver&Fit healthy aging and exercise program, including gym and YMCA network access plus on-demand videos.

One Thing We Will Not Gloss Over

Physicians Mutual Insurance Company and Physicians Life Insurance Company both carry an A+ (Superior) rating from A.M. Best. Your Oklahoma Medigap policy is not written by either of them - it comes from Physicians Select Insurance Company, which was formed in 2022 and for which A.M. Best rating information is not available. That is the carrier’s own disclosure, not our opinion.

This is not a reason to avoid the policy. Physicians Select is part of a long-established group, and Medigap benefits are standardized by federal law regardless of who writes them. But if you have seen the A+ rating attached to this product somewhere, it was attached to the wrong company, and you deserve to know that before you sign.

Physicians Select Medicare Supplement policies in Oklahoma are issued on forms S060OK, S065OK, S066OK, S068OK, F018 and F019. If a document you are handed does not carry one of these, ask why.

Before you choose, know about Oklahoma’s birthday rule. Oklahoma is one of only eight states where you can switch Medigap carriers every year with no health questions - a 60 day window opening on your birthday, for any plan with the same or lesser benefits. It substantially changes the risk of picking the wrong plan now. Read how the Oklahoma birthday rule works.

Common Questions

Which company actually writes the policy in Oklahoma?

Physicians Select Insurance Company, formed in 2022. It is part of the Physicians Mutual family but is a separate legal entity from Physicians Mutual Insurance Company and Physicians Life Insurance Company.

Which Medigap plans can I buy here?

Plan A, Plan F, Plan G and High-Deductible Plan G. Plan F is limited to people who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. Plan N is not offered in Oklahoma.

What does attained-age rating mean for me?

Your premium increases as you age, on top of general rate increases. These plans usually look cheapest at 65 and get expensive later. Compare the structure, not just the first-year premium.

Can I switch plans later if the premium climbs?

In Oklahoma, yes, more easily than in most states. A 60 day open enrollment window opens on your birthday each year, letting you move to a plan with the same or lesser benefits with no medical underwriting.

What is Innovative Plan G?

A standard Plan G with a discount rider that adds a deductible for up to the first three calendar years in exchange for a permanently lower premium. It is reachable through Oklahoma’s birthday rule because innovative benefits are not treated as significant benefits.

Is this an A+ rated company?

Physicians Mutual and Physicians Life are rated A+ by A.M. Best. Physicians Select, which writes the Oklahoma Medigap policy, was formed in 2022 and A.M. Best rating information is not available for it.
